Sexting

The term is a portmanteau of 'sex' and 'texting,' though the practice extends well beyond traditional text messaging.

Research indicates that a significant portion of adults have engaged in sexting at some point, with the practice being particularly common among younger adults. Sexting as a term and concept emerged in the early 2000s with the proliferation of camera phones and text messaging. The practice of using available communication technology for sexual purposes, however, has a much longer history. Erotic letters have existed for as long as written communication, and telephone sex emerged shortly after the invention of the telephone. Sexting represents the latest iteration in a long history of humans using communication technology for sexual expression.

The social and legal landscape of sexting has evolved rapidly. Early discourse focused heavily on teen sexting and its legal implications, particularly regarding child exploitation laws. Over time, the conversation has broadened to include adult sexting as a normal aspect of modern sexuality, the importance of digital consent, and the development of legal frameworks to protect individuals from non-consensual sharing of intimate content.
