Olfactophilia

Olfactophilia describes a pattern of sexual arousal specifically centered on body odors, particularly those from the genital, axillary (armpit), or other sexually significant areas. While scent plays a recognized role in normal sexual attraction, olfactophilia describes an intensified or focused interest where body odors become a primary source of arousal.

From a biological perspective, the role of scent in human sexuality is well-established. Pheromones and other chemical signals produced by the body influence attraction, arousal, and mate selection. The vomeronasal organ and olfactory system are connected to brain regions involved in emotional and sexual processing, providing a direct neurological pathway between scent perception and arousal.

The specific odors that appeal to olfactophilic individuals vary. Some are attracted to the natural musky scent of unwashed skin, while others may be drawn to the smell of sweat, genital secretions, or other body odors. The preference may be for the scent of a specific partner or for body odors generally. In some cases, the interest specifically involves foul or strong odors, adding a transgressive element.

Olfactophilia is considered a common and generally benign interest that exists on a continuum with normal olfactory-mediated sexual attraction. The enjoyment of a partner's natural scent is a widespread aspect of human sexuality. The interest only becomes clinically relevant if it becomes exclusive, compulsive, or involves non-consensual behavior such as sniffing strangers' belongings.

The term 'olfactophilia' derives from the Latin 'olfactus' (the sense of smell, from 'olfacere' meaning to smell) and the Greek 'philia' (love or attraction).

The importance of scent in human sexuality has been recognized since antiquity. Ancient perfume traditions were explicitly connected to seduction and sexual appeal. The scientific study of olfaction in human sexuality has revealed the significant role of chemical signals in attraction, from the MHC-related scent preferences that influence mate choice to the arousal-enhancing effects of specific body odors.
