Dungeon monitor

A dungeon monitor, often abbreviated as DM, is an individual appointed to supervise activities at a BDSM play party, dungeon event, or similar gathering. Their primary responsibilities include ensuring that all participants follow the venue's house rules, intervening if unsafe practices are observed, confirming that all activities appear consensual, and serving as a resource for participants who need assistance or have concerns.

DMs are typically experienced BDSM practitioners who have been vetted by the event organizers and trained in the specific protocols of the venue. They must be knowledgeable about a wide range of BDSM activities, safety concerns, and the signs of distress or non-consent. Good DMs are approachable, observant, and capable of handling sensitive situations with discretion and authority.

The duties of a DM include monitoring scenes for safety violations, checking in with participants who appear distressed, ensuring that intoxicated individuals are not engaging in play, maintaining clear access to emergency exits and first aid supplies, and enforcing rules about photography, touching, and interrupting scenes. DMs typically work in shifts to maintain alertness throughout an event.

DMs do not interfere with consensual activities that are conducted safely. Their role is to create a safe environment that allows participants to explore without worry, not to police the specific activities people choose to engage in. However, they have the authority to stop any scene that appears to violate consent, poses a safety risk, or breaks house rules.

The presence of dungeon monitors is considered a hallmark of well-organized BDSM events. Many experienced practitioners will not attend events that do not have designated DMs, viewing their presence as an essential safety measure.

The dungeon monitor role developed within the organized BDSM community as play parties and public dungeons became more formalized. As these events grew in size and frequency, the need for designated safety personnel became apparent.

The role drew inspiration from various models including event security, lifeguarding, and community self-governance traditions within the BDSM community. The leather community's emphasis on mentorship and community responsibility provided a foundation for the DM system.

Modern DM practices have been refined through community organizations, educational events, and the sharing of best practices. Many BDSM organizations offer specific training programs for dungeon monitors, covering topics such as recognizing non-consent, first aid for BDSM-related injuries, conflict resolution, and event management.
